Casgliadau Arlein

1 CuA vessel tier sheet fragment. Three distinct sheet edges seem present, each associated with marginal rivets. The sheet has a slightly undulating surface with no marked curvature evident. One edge, bordered by two rivets is slightly outurned, possibly indicating a rim, whose outer surface has been strengthened by a narrow bronze strip.The other two edges, of which straight sections of only 6.3 and 7.0mm survive, are at a near 90 degree angle to each other and each have a single adjacent rivet. The four rivets have small sub-rectangular heads and round shanks, an unusual feature within this assemblage. Though clearly from a vessel of multi-sheet construction, this tier sheet fragment is not greatly diagnostic. One possibility is that this a B/C or C/D tier join from a Class B2 cauldron, belonging to the Llyn Fawr period (750-600BC). However the small rivets with sub-rectangular heads are atypical. Another, perhaps less likely alternative (given the clear Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age focus of deposition at this site) is that this is the upper rim and tier fragment from a Projecting Belly cauldron of Type Santon, belonging to the Late Iron Age and early Romano-British period.
