22 page paper on the work of Louis Gustave Mouchel of Briton Ferry. Mouchel was a UK pioneer of reinforced concrete, and was an important and pioneering early twentieth century engineer with an international reputation. His status as a long-term resident of Briton Ferry resulted in the earliest major reinforced concrete building in the UK being constructed at Swansea (Weaver’s Mill, 1898). This paper embodies original research and very usefully provides a reasonably detailed personal and professional biography of a very notable civil engineer with strong Welsh connections by residence, and places him firmly in an international context. The author is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
