This hollowed out long bone was discovered containint a decorated wooden shaft. They were found unstratified on the foreshore in the area of Paelaeochannels 5 and 6.
Both ends of the bone were cut off and are very worn and roundede. Very little of the bone surface survives. As it was unstratified, it could have been sea rolled. As very simmilar hollowed-out bone from late Bronze Age Potterne was described as a handle with polished wear (Seager Smith 2000, fig94, no75). This bone was far larger than the wooden stake found inside it meaning it couldn't have fit as its handle. It could however have served its container or possible a quiver, the extra space allowing quick access to the wooden object.
The wooden shaft itself is the fragment of a longer shaft. It had been delicated carved to a narrow shaft and decorated with a series of evenly spaced zig-zag lines running along the side. It seems most likely to have been part of an arrow shaft.
