Chamois leather tie-on waist pocket. Worn by Ann Beynon (1803-85), Flimstone Farm, Narberth, Pembrokeshire, who sold eggs and butter at market.
The front and back of this pocket are each made of one piece of unlined chamois leather extended by a band at the top. Leather is also used to edge the opening and bind the pocket edges. Two different tapes are used. The pocket is patched in leather on the lower front and back and stitching is used for other extensive repairs. This pocket is constructed in the same way as many cloth pockets but its use of leather is rare. Only one other leather pocket was found by the Pockets of History survey. [Description by Barbara Burman: Pockets of History Project]
