Jug
Jug of clear lead glass, Greek 'oinochoë' form standing on a spreading foot with ground-out concave base, baluster-shaped body with spreading rim formed into three wide spouts, plain applied strap handle, the upper terminal of which applied to the inside of the rim, the lower terminal ground flat on the face and sides and applied to a flat-ground patch on the body; the lower half of the jug decorated on the outside with enamelled white water lilies with yellow centres and green leaves. Minor inclusions and air bubbles in the glass, minor damage to the enamelling (scratches, one small chip).
The jug exemplifies two key principles of mid-nineteenth century design reform, those of being true to the natural beauty of the material and of using appropriate ornament. The glass is clear and uncut, while the lilies reflect the jug’s intended use.
