Vase, stoneware, narrow based flaring to broad, rounded shoulder, short upright neck with angular flange below the rim; covered with an ash glaze and painted freely in brown with stylised bamboo, the rim is also painted with brown pigment.

Born in Surrey, Henry Hammond originally studied at Croydon School of Art from 1929-34, He then received a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London from 1934-38, where he was a student of William Staite Murray. Like Staite Murray, Hammond adopted a painterly approach to surface decoration, which he applied to stoneware pots. After the end of the Second World War, in which he had served as a soldier, he made slipware exclusively for a several years, but returned to the production of stoneware in the 1950s. He taught at the School of Art in Farnham from 1946-79.
