Lead cistern
Large, cylindrical lead cistern in the forecourt of St Fagans Castle. Cast relief decoration featuring two rows of rectangular panels below an ornate frieze. Each panel bears two arches borne by two columns framing foliage. One panel depicts the Stuart coat of arms surrounded by four Tudor roses and the date of 1620. On the opposite side is the coat of arms of the Lewis family of the Van who owned the Castle from 1616 to 1730 when it passed to the Plymouth Estate through marriage.
Its early 17th century date makes it one of the earliest lead cisterns known. It probably served as a reservoir to store rainwater for general use around the Castle. The history of the cistern is unclear. It may be original to the Castle, but as it is not depicted on any plans until after 1850, it may have spent some time at the Van before beign returned to the Castle.
