Frog Lane Colliery pit bottom. This pit bottom scene shows men about to be wound up the shaft in the cage. Signals are being given to the winding engineman by the 'onsetter' on the right. The small diameter of the shaft is reflected in the cage size, each deck of which only carries five men or boys. Note the absence of any protective gates on the cage.
