Early Medieval pottery mortarium
Rigoir Form 29. Body fragment: Form D1. Square everted rim with slight external groove and pronounced internal bead or ledge for a lid. The pouring spout has been fabricated by undercutting the bead and bending the resulting fillets of clay out over the rim; there is no depression in the rim itself. The underside of the base is slightly grooved to mark a pseudo-foot-ring, and the base itself appears to be rather thin for the pounding or heavy rubbing which might be expected for a mortarium. The lower interior has sparse quartz trituration grits and pock-marks where other grits have been rubbed out, and there are similar pock-marks on the upper interior. Standard Fabric D ware with black wash well preserved both inside and out.
