A sherd of a Lezoux ware samian bowl of form Dr31. The neat stamp reads: MEDDICNVS. This is the stamp of the potter Meddignus of Lezoux. Note the use of Ds with a line through them. These barred Ds are more properly known as Tau Gallicum and are an attempt to capture a sound in the Gaulish language not thought to be properly represented in the Latin alphabet. The sound is believed to have been like a 'dz' or 'ts'. Likely to date from AD 140- 200 (Trajanic).
