The East India Company began as trading company in 1600 and came to hold a monopoly in south, east and south-east Asia. It traded in goods such as silk, tea and spices.
Through fort-building and using its extensive army, they colonised parts of south Asia.
The company transported enslaved people in addition to using them for labour.
