Ganed James Charles yn Warrington, yn fab i'r dylunydd a gwneuthurwr dodrefn o Gymru, Richard Charles. Ym 1872 ymunodd ag Ysgolion yr Academi Frenhinol cyn mynd yn ei flaen i astudio ym Mharis. Yno cafod ei ddenu at Argraffiadaeth, ac yn arbennig y mudiad plein-air. Wedi dychwelyd i Brydain, bu'n arddangos yn gyson, a chafodd beth llwyddiant dramor, gan ennill medalau yn Exposition Universelle Paris ym 1889, a Ffair y Byd yn Chicago ym 1893. Mae'r gwaith hwn, a ddangoswyd yn yr Exhibition of Works by Certain Modern Artists of Welsh Birth or Extraction yng Nghaerdydd ym 1913-14, yn cynrychioli'r Argraffiadaeth Brydeinig gymharol flaengar a gysylltir â'r New English Art Club rhwng y1890au a'r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf.

I have just seen your comment re the booklet by Jac Charles. Jac Charles was my aunt and many years ago sent me a booklet which was dedicated to me as the grandson of James Charles. The booklet contains a biography, pictures and appendices of his works.If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
