Catrin o Ferain, 'Mam Cymru' (1534/5-1591) [Katheryn of Berain, 'The Mother of Wales' (1534/5-1591)]

Mae Catrin o Ferain yn dal llyfr gweddi gan fwytho penglog dynol â golwg ddwys ar ei hwyneb. Mae'r benglog yn digwydd yn aml mewn portreadau yn yr 16eg ganrif; mae’r gwrthgyferbyniad rhwng cnawd ac asgwrn yn ein hatgoffa pa mor fregus yw bywyd. Mae’n ymddangos fel pe bai’n galaru, ond mewn gwirionedd roedd hi newydd briodi’r asiant brenhinol Richard Clough. Fe’i cyflwynir fel gwraig addas i fasnachwr cyfoethog. Roedd ei gwisg goeth, ei chroen golau a’i haeliau cul yn hynod ffasiynol, ac mae’r llyfr gweddi’n cadarnhau ei duwioldeb.

Catrin oedd merch Tudur ap Robert Fychan o Ferain, Clwyd ac roedd yn ddisgynnydd uniongyrchol i Harri VII. Priododd bedair gwaith ac oherwydd ei hamrywiol blant a'i llys-blant fe'i gelwid yn Fam Cymru. Bu farw ei gw^r cyntaf John, mab ac aer Syr John Salusbury o Lyweni ym 1556. Ym 1567 priododd Syr Richard Clough, marsiandâwr cyfoethog o Ddinbych a phartner i'r banciwr Syr Thomas Gresham, a oedd yn byw yn Antwerp a Hamburg. Mae'n debyg i'r portread hwn gael ei beintio yng Ngogledd yr Iseldiroedd gan yr arlunydd van Cronenburgh o Fresia. Yn dilyn marwolaeth Clough ym 1570 dychwelodd i Gymru, ac erbyn 1573 yr oedd wedi priodi Maurice Wynn o Wydir, a fu farw ym 1580. Ym 1584 priododd am y tro olaf ag Edward Thelwall, Plas y Ward.

Has anyone ever noticed the pupil of her left eye? It looks as if she has a coloboma. The detail of the portrait is so precise that I have to think her eye looked like that. She was a fascinating woman.

Discovered Katherine Tudor was my 9th Great-Grandmother, stemming from John Salusbury. I see I have some relatives in here! *waves*

I am a direct descendant of Catrin, Mother of Wales, I am a member of the Wynne family from Garthewin and we have her portrait which hangs in Aberystwyth University Library, her son Thomas Salusbury was involved in the Babbington plot and his last words were "I was born a Catholic and I will die a Catholic."

Berain is at Google/Bing map ref 53.215386, -3.488243. I have visited it. The owners were very friendly when I explained that Katheryn was an ancestor.

Has anyone heard of the stain in Gwydir Castle which marks the spot where Catrin is supposed to have murdered her husband Richard Clough?

Haia Twm

I also grew up very aware of Catrin and her story, as some of my family also hail from the same area. It is just such a fascinating portrait. I particularly like the jewels - she looks quite plainly dressed until you start counting the diamonds she's wearing!

The publically available information on Berain, which is on private property, can be found on the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales' Coflein service: Berain.

A GREAT article bringing back so many memories.
I was born and brought up in Denbigh / Dinbych and reference was often made to Katheryn of Berain, 'The Mother of Wales'.
No-one seemed to know where 'Berain' was / is. There were a number of places which were called Berain but were far too modern to be the original.
I notice that someone has posted that they've been to the building and found it rather small. However, the writer didn't give a precise location.
Any clues, or exact details, please.

Diolch

I just discovered and confirmed that Katrin was my 12× great grandmother through her marriage to my 12× great grandfather, Sir John Salusbury. How cool is that. Now what?

Katheryn Tudor was my 11th g-grandmother. Her g-g-grandmother was Catherine of Valois, the Queen Consort to England's King Henry V, mother of Henry VI, and daughter of France's King Charles VI.
