Alfred Sisley oedd yr unig un o'r Argraffiadwyr mawr i weithio yng Nghymru, gan dreulio'r cyfnod rhwng Gorffennaf a Medi 1897 ym Mhenarth ac ym Mae Langland ar benrhyn Gŵyr. Y darluniau hyn o dde Cymru, sy'n edrych ar effeithiau'r golau a'r tywydd, yw ei unig olygfeydd o'r môr, ac maent yn dwyn i gof golygfeydd Monet o arfordir Llydaw. Priododd Sisley ei bartner tymor-hir, Eugénie Lescouzec, yn ystod ei gyfnod ym Mhenarth, a'u mis mêl oedd eu cyfnod ym Mae Langland, er bod iechyd y ddau yn dirywio erbyn hynny.

Mae'r lluniau o Fae Langland yn ymrannu'n ddau grŵp: yn gyntaf, y golygfeydd o Draeth Bach y Forwyn (Bae Rotherslade heddiw), islaw'r Gwesty Osborne lle roedd y ddau yn aros; yn ail, nifer o ddarluniau o Graig Storr. Roedd y cerrig brig ynysig hyn ger y gwesty'n atyniad mawr iddo, ac fe'i darluniodd adeg llanw a distyll. Mae'r gwaith yma'n dangos ochr ogleddol y graig ar noson braf gyda'r llanw ar drai.

An exhibition of the South Wales paintings by Alfred Sisley would create a great deal of interest .Phil Mills

Dear Philip,

You're quite right; according to the exhibition catalogue Sisley in England and Wales (published in 2008) there are 20 known works produced by Sisley during his time in south Wales. We have one other depiction of the Welsh coast by him in our collection: The Cliff at Penarth, evening, low tide.

Best wishes,

I spent many hundreds of happy youthful hours in Rotherslade. When my parents and I heard the gong for lunch at the Osborne Hotel (now alas torn down) we imagined that the sandwiches we were eating were much better then the fancy food offered at the hotel dining room. I often used to jump off the Big Rock (as we called it) into the sea, so shall look for a painting that shows higher tide than this one. Last summer I saw an exhibition from the National Museum of Wales at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and there, to my delight, was the Big Rock!

Hi,
It was a delight to come across this Alfred Sisley painting of Storrs Rock, Langland Bay. It caught my eye and drew me in because of the light. The painter has cleverly used a person to show the scale of the rock. When I read about the painting I was thrilled to find that this was painted at Langland Bay. (A place very close to my heart. I have spent many hours there and continue to visit all through the year!) However, in all my memorable times there I never discovered Storrs Rock! Thanks to my visit to the national museum and discovery of Alfred Sisley I shall now see Storrs Rock and marvel at how and why I found it!
