GILLOT, Eugène Louis (1868 - 1925)

Dyddiad: 1912

Cyfrwng: olew ar gynfas

Maint: 196.9 x 276.3 cm

Derbyniwyd: 1920; Rhodd; Syr Alfred Mond

Rhif Derbynoli: NMW A 2619

Mab i bensaer oedd Gillot a gafodd ei eni a'i hyfforddi ym Mharis. Dangosodd ei waith yn Arddangosfa Byd Paris ym 1900 ac roedd yn adnabyddus ym Mhrydain am ddarluniau mawr o ddigwyddiadau. Cynhyrchodd Gillot ddau ddarlun arall o ddigwyddiadau swyddogol ym Mhrydain ym 1911, sef Arolwg Spithead a Choroni George V. Mae'r darlun hwn yn dangos Arwisgiad Dafydd, sef Edward VIII yn ddiweddarach, yng Nghastell Caernarfon ar 13 Gorffennaf 1911. Mae'r olygfa tua'r de-ddwyrain o Borth y Brenin. Ar y chwith mae Porth y Frenhines ac y dde y Tŵr Du. Yn y blaendir mae'r prif lwyfan â cherflun o Ddewi Sant arno. Mae Tywysog Cymru yn darllen ei araith yn union ar ôl ei arwisgiad. Wrth ei ymyl mae'r Brenin Siôr V yn eistedd mewn gwisg forwrol a'r Frenhines Mary mewn gwisg a het wen. O gwmpas y llwyfan mae pobl bwysig mewn lifrai a gwisgoedd derwyddol ac ar y chwith mae côr yn eistedd, yn cynnwys 200 o ferched mewn gwisg Gymreig. Ar ragfuriau Porth y Frenhines mae Trympedwyr Gwŷr Meirch y Teulu. Cafodd y darlun hwn ei gomisiynu gan Syr Alfred Mond, sef y Barwn Melchett wedyn (1868-1930). Ef oedd sylfaenydd ICI a rheolai hefyd y rhan fwyaf o faes glo carreg Cymru. Roedd yn bresennol yn yr Arwisgiad gan ei fod yn AS Rhyddfrydol dros Abertawe o 1910 i 1923.

Is it true that the day of edward's investiture was so hot that he almost fainted?

I have recently aquired a painting by Eugene Louis Gillot. I have all appropriate appraisal paperwork. I am however, interested in learning more about it... It is a portrait. If you are interested, please email me. Thank you.

My Mother always told me my Grandfather was at the investiture. He was a South Wales miner who later served in the First World War, L/Cpl William John Davies MM ... not sure what he was doing in 1912 but he may have also served in the Merchant Navy when younger.

Dear Marsha Swift,
Thank you for your comment, we don't hold any information relating to the choir at the investiture unfortunately, I would suggest trying Gwynedd Archives, or the National Archives as they may hold details of the choir that was present at the Investiture.

My grandmother stated the she was in the choir at Edward's investiture. Where might I find more information about the choir?

My great Grandfather Sir Alfred Mond - his daughter Eva - Marchioness of Reading - was my Grandmother. I inherited several Gillots from my grand mother and now I realise why she had them. Do you have a photo of the "Investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarvon" I would very much like to see it.

Sincerely Antony Rufus Isaacs
