Early Medieval stone cist slabs
This is a thin and unshaped fragment of stone carved with a simple cross.
Description; The stone is thin and very roughly triangular in shape. The surface is incised with a simple linear latin cross framed within a straight sided uneven square or rectangle. The frame projects beyond one of the lines of the cross. It was quite deeply incised with a knife. It is mudstone, probably locally derived.
Provenance; Found in a long cist-and-lintel grave for an infant. It had been used as a side stone at the western (head) end of the grave, with the cross facing inwards.
